Any chance of seeing a single 1gb stick with tigher timings than 3-3-3-8 any time soon?

Yep. OCZ 3200EB 2x1GB maintains the familiar 2.5-3-2 timings and also maintains the familiar overclockability of EB...You could probably get DDR460.
BTW the 3-3-3 sticks have been reported to overclock spectacularly while maintaining 3-3-3, so if that's your thing, the timings won't seem so lax. OCZ's product page contains links to reviews showing 2gb overclock to 488 mhz with the 3-3-3 performance series on A64...pretty darn impressive.
And finally, OCZ seem to have very quietly released PC3500 and PC3700 versions of the 3-3-3 1GB sticks. They're not currently at newegg, but lots of other stores have them. Beware that the PC3700 variant sports the "HyperSpeed" tuning, which unofficially means "will perform best on Intel; will work on A64 but not as well as if we had used a more neutral SPD". Grrr...
And finally, other companies have recently released (non-registered) ECC variants of 1gb sticks with 3-3-3 timings, which is quite interesting, but since your K8N doesn't work with ECC, never mind...
I think that all of the above use Micron chips, though I could be wrong.
The 1gig modules don't use Micron ;) so another mystery for you to solve..LOL
They do 2.5-3-2-7 or so and do clock pretty well. The 3200 Premier 1 gigs do 3-3-3 at 200 and many do 3-3-3 at 466+ so these may be a good option also for you.

Hi Tony,
When you say the 1GB doesn't use Micron, does that apply to the 2.5-3-2 EB and the 3-3-3 Performance Series, or both? I was pretty sure that the EB series used Micron, but maybe that's just at the 512MB range...and as far as the Performance Series, well I was just assuming it was Micron, since their retail arm sells, you guessed it, 1gb sticks at 3-3-3.
If you've got 2 totally different IC's both capable of 2.5-3-2 then (speculating a lot) that would seem to indicate that "EB black magic" (which I loosely define as having tRP of 2 no matter how high the overclock) never was limited to just running on Micron chips. Interesting! Hmmm let's see, PC4400/4800 Hynix EB at 3-4-2 instead of the familiar 3-4-4...now that would be something! :)
The 3200EB 1 gig modules don't run Micron IC's..;)
