View Full Version : Support Question OCZ2G8008GQ + Intel DG45ID, problem with half(?) of the kit
When I refer to memtest I refer to Memtest86+ 4.00. I observed similar behavior with previous versions. Throughout I am using default motherboard auto-detect settings, so the memory timings are 5-5-5-18.
One pair from the OCZ2G8008GQ kit consistently passes several passes of memtest in both pairs of slots in the Intel DG45ID. The other pair consistently fails the first pass, often within minutes. The same address appear to fail each time. They fail in both slots, and if they are individual or together.
However, both pairs pass 3+ passes of memtest in a ASUS M2NPV-VM system (same timings).
Overall the DG45ID seems stable, in addition to the 'good' pair passing memtest, prime95 can run for over 12 hours without problems. I am unable to account for the difference in behavior, please advice.

You need to raise the memory voltage to 2.1V. These will not work at 1.8V
With voltage set to 2.12 errors continue.
Example:
test: 6
Pass: 1
Failing Address: 000561a1e40 - 1377.6Mb
Good: fffffffb
Bad: effffffb
Err bits: 10000000
I have also confirmed that each of the 'bad pair' still produces errors when tested individually. One curious data point is that 12+ hours of prime95 selftest passed with the 'bad' pair.
If there is additional information I can provide please let me know.

If prime95 is passing then the errors in memtest are more likely program errors.
Try using OCCT to test the system. If it makes it through an hour of the test it's stable

OCCT relies on proprietary commercial software to which I do not have access. Can you suggest an alternative?
One additional thing I have observed is that when all 4 sticks of RAM are in, Memtest reports only 7080.
I am concerned that there may be a greater element of non-determinism at work. I double checked that errors occurred in a version of memtest86. Yes they did. Back to memtest86+ v4, for the first time a pass (sample size is over 10 by this point) completed with no errors. Surprised I placed all 4 sticks in to see if something miraculous had happened. Instead the computer would not POST but instead power cycled (turned on and off without reaching a beep). Concerned I went through each single stick, and each pair combination but could not repeat the problem in isolation. Placing all 4 sticks in again and the system booted without trouble. memtest then quickly detected an error at the same location as before (000561a1e40). At this point I fear I am at rapidly diminishing returns where I risk damage to the sticks while switching them around for testing.
I'm sorry if that was too much narrative, but I am truly baffled by the data points. For example, the boot trouble would support a power supply problem being the root cause, but that does not fit with errors occurring at the same locations in memory.

I have taken a screenshot of a a run with all 8 sticks incase there is some pertinent information.

Raise the NB (MCH) voltage on the Intel board.
If the ram runs error free in another board, very unlikely the ram is the issue.

Microsoft Windows.

The DG45ID bios does not allow that voltage setting to be adjusted.

How are you running Prime95? You are using a client based in another OS?
Do you only see errors in memtest or do other programs error with the "bad" pair?
I was running prime95 off of a cd (this one (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) if it is relevant). If needed I can run any free diagnostic program that will compile for x86(-64) and runs on Unix-like systems.
Yes I am only seeing errors with memtest, but that includes multiple versions of both memtest86 and memtest86+.
Is there any other information that I can provide?

Can you use the system day to day without errors/problems/crashes?
That is the real test. Put the modules in the board and use it.
