    Default Windows 7 x64 Working Ramdisk ?

I am running Windows 7 on a 30Gbyte OCZ Core Series V2 SATA II 2.5" SSD.

I have turned off pagefile, log files, and applied most recommended Vista/W7 tweaks.

I am concerned that I won't make the 2 year warranty period. My 30G V2 Sata drive is MLC and by most accounts you get 10,000 erase cycles. The warranty is for 2 years. This suggests to me that the rise in Average Erase Count needs to be under 10000/(365*2) per day or 13.7. But my counts are higher than that ... I suspect they will be over 20 per day despite turning off W7's logging, turning off the pagefile and generally tidying everything as much as possible.

So I'd like to put 5 apps that are fairly noisy onto a Ramdisk. My problem is that despite running with Vista Compatibility and Admin rights I can't seem to get any of them to install (I've never been totally stumped on XP or Vista 32 or 64 so its not pure finger trouble).

Can anyone advise what ram disks they are running currently in W7, whether its x64, and what they needed to do to get them to run please?

We are waiting around for a RAM Disk program to support W7.

See the SSD life issue discussed in this thread:

Ok you need RamDiskVE 1.0.104. http://www.cenatek.com/product_page_ramdisk.php

After download right click -> Properties -> Compatibility -> Run this program in .... -> set to Windows Vista
and at bottom set Privilege Level -> Tick 'Run this program as an administrator'

If does not work turn UAC right down (off).

If that don't work pm me.

I couldn't get that to work either.

But, with my trading apps running the risk of chewing the disk to pieces, I tried Olof's imdisk again and managed to get it running. Follow all instructions (0verkill by doing both ways when he gives alternatives, and do import his test certificate).

I also changed the MSI, but I will just get BSOD's when the ramdisk driver loads, and I have to start in safe mode to get rid of it again.

I thought you might be interested in some test results. I tested the Imdisk ramdisk against Superspeed ramdisk (running on xp sp3) and against my Seagate 7200 hard disk. Should I get the cenatek drive going I will test it too (or someone else can).

The tests are with DskSpeed.exe, freeware on the net.

    Ramdisk results, not surprising.

This why perfect to have OCZ SSD boot drive then place some stuff on ramdisk.

Someone needs to set up 2 RAM drives and software RAID0 them! (Seriously though that won't work... well, maybe (unlikely) on the F platform, but even still... :P)

How did you guys get Ramdrive to work on W7? I tried to install it and the installation failed. I even set the compatibility mode as suggested. Please help.

I used a program called SuperOrca and searched for the error message that pops up. Then I dropped that part of the install and it worked like a charm. Was really intuitive. I've never even done anything like that before.

Your numbers don't take into account wear leveling. You would have to rewrite ALL of the data on the drive(S) (even the hidden storage dedicated to wear leveling) to get the figures you posted.

I am not sure that is a valid issue at this time.

Sure, with SOME (not all) wear leveling strategies, SSDs slow over time.

The same can be said for HDDs that fragment over time.

Most users do not defrag, and Vista's auto defrag is far from doing a great job.

How did you get it to work?

Got the file left to share?

    /Best Regards Thomas.
