Thread: Summit FW Upgrade?

  1. #1

    Default Summit FW Upgrade?

After months waiting I would like to know whether we are getting the flasher or not.

My drive came without GC and I would really like to know if I will be able to get GC or TRIM running in the short term. Hopefully we are near a release of the flasher and the team can begin implementing TRIM...

So any news for us unlucky owners of old FW Summit??

EDIT: SEE post 98 of this thread for the most recent info.

I am happy bootcamp works, but these drives desperately need cleaning.

    Default Summit To Support Trim?

    Ok Guys,

Just read a long article on anandtech about SSD, great article, I highly recommend it.

It praised OCZ Vertex and pretty much recommended staying away from samsung drives.

I was one of the unlucky getting the older version of the summit sweepstakes two weeks ago from newegg. I am patiently waiting for news. I appreciate all that OCZ is doing and would just like to know for sure that this drive will eventually get garbage collection and support trim?

Oh man he totally eviscerates Samsung.

I'm too ashamed to admit to anyone I have a Summit after reading this!

I too would like the firmware update to support trim. It seems like everything is aimed at the Vertex users. What about us?

I have some issues running Windows 7 RTM. When will there be a firmware update for us Summit users?

This question has been answered in this very forum at least 5 times.

We will have an update for the Summit drives. The best estimate I have is somewhere near the October release of Windows 7.

We do not know if Trim will be in that release or not.

OCZ can't do much of anything about this. The only way the Summit drives will get garbage collection and TRIM support is if Samsung releases a flashing program to the end user (or you got lucky enough to get one of the drives that came with the GC-enabled firmware).

OCZ can't force Samsung to release anything, they don't own them. All OCZ can do is tend to its customers and ask Samsung to release a flasher. Again, Samsung has no obligation to comply to any demands made by OCZ.

The OCZ support team has been incredibly helpful to all their customers. I know for a while (maybe still now?) Tony was letting people ship the drives to him so he could flash them to the GC-enabled firmware.

The reason the Vertex gets so much attention is because OCZ and Indilinx work fairly closely on the firmware for these drives.

There are a lot of angry Summit owners, but we really should be thanking OCZ, not demanding more from them.

Samsung is the Giant, OCZ is Jack.

Inidlinx and OCZ's R&D dept. work very closely. Indilinx are very happy with this interaction and things happen at a much greater pace. The same thing cannot be said for Samsung. They have their own schedule for any updates and do not seem concerned that we would like them sooner.

Hopefully anandtech just turned up the heat, its going to be difficult to sell samsung to any that have read the article.

But the article also pointed out that most of Samsung's SSD output goes into OEM laptops.

In my opinion, (see what I did there ) There is no way Samsung is going to ignore Trim, they will implement it. Since Win 7 is not "officially released to the public", they will have Trim somewhere around this time, that is my hypothesis at the moment.

I sent my Summit back to Novatech - not because I wanted to, but because I was forced to; not by OCZ I hasten to add, I have the greatest of admiration for the guys on here for all the help and sound advice they give, but by Samsung and their long drawn out agenda.

Eric is right in that Samsung is the Giant (or Ace, debatable lol) and that OCZ is the Jack - however Samsung might want to recall a little tale about a little lad called David who brought down Goliath because of Goliath's ****iness and assumed superiority.

As for me and SSD's I'm just waiting for my refund from Novatech to hit my bank and then I'm off to Scan to get me a Vertex (on offer at a very nippy £150) .... it will be a relief to get an SSD back in my case

As an aside my Samsung monitor went to the wall on Friday and I phoned Samsung to avail myself of their 3 year warranty swapout - said they would phone me back; no they didn't ..... Samsung and Customer Service just don't marry up and never will IMHO

Roll on Vertex ..... thoughts and hopes to everyone else.

I had previously contacted Samsung support about firmware updates and GC/Trim and got this response:

I am sorry we have not specific schedule for firmware updating.
When Windows7 is released in October, we will support trim command that is maintenance feature of Windows 7.
